Amid widespread objections from political leaders, historians, and various organizations, the makers of the upcoming film ‘Chhaava’ have decided to remove a controversial dance sequence featuring Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

Strong Backlash Over Lezim Dance Scene

The contentious scene, which depicted Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Queen Yesubai performing the Lezim dance, drew sharp criticism. Among the prominent voices opposing the scene was Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who called for its removal, deeming it highly objectionable.

BJP MP Udayanraje Bhosale, another descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji, also echoed the demand for the scene’s deletion.

Director Announces Scene Removal After Meeting Raj Thackeray

‘Chhaava’ stars Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, alongside Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna. Director Laxman Utekar recently met Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and, following their discussion, confirmed that the Lezim dance scene would be cut from the film.

Speaking about the meeting, Utekar stated, “We sought Raj Thackeray’s advice as he is well-read and knowledgeable about history. During our discussion, he provided valuable insights, and we have decided to implement the suggested changes.”

He further added, “Our intention was never to hurt sentiments. However, if the scene has unintentionally offended anyone or if there is a belief that our warrior king should not be depicted dancing in such a manner, we will respect those sentiments and remove the sequence. Since it is not a crucial part of the film, we will delete it.”

Official Confirmation from Marathi Language Minister

Maharashtra’s Minister of Marathi Language, Uday Samant, confirmed that the film’s director and producers have agreed to remove the controversial scene.

“If the makers have decided to delete the scene, there should be no further objections to the film’s release,” he stated.

Previously, Samant had insisted that ‘Chhaava’ should be screened for historians and scholars before release to ensure historical accuracy. He emphasized that any content deemed offensive would not be tolerated.

Ensuring Historical Accuracy and Respect

In a post on X, Samant praised the effort to bring Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s story to the big screen but stressed the importance of handling historical narratives with utmost care.

“Our stance is clear—any element that dishonors the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj must be removed. If necessary, further action will be taken after reviewing the film. Otherwise, its release will not be permitted,” he warned.

Shiv Sena Calls for Sensitivity in Historical Films

Shiv Sena spokesperson Manisha Kayande also weighed in, stating that films based on historical figures like Shivaji Maharaj and Sambhaji Maharaj should be approached with sensitivity.

“These leaders are revered by the people. As Minister Uday Samant suggested, filmmakers should seek expert advice before making movies on historical figures. If a film’s content hurts public sentiments, corrective measures should be taken in advance. The Censor Board will ensure that appropriate guidelines are followed before release,” she said.

With the controversial scene now removed, the anticipation for ‘Chhaava’ continues to build. The film aims to showcase the life and legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, and the makers are committed to ensuring historical authenticity while respecting cultural sentiments.
