A UAE Olympic shooting champion, who says he has been unfavourably portrayed in the Bollywood blockbuster "Sarkar", has asked his country's ministry of information and culture to stop screening of the film locally.

The Hindi movie, released in July, portrays an Olympic shooter from Dubai as a hired assassin of a mafia ganglord.

Shaikh Ahmad Mohammad Hasher Al Maktoum, UAE's only gold medallist and a member of the Dubai royal family, believes the character refers to him.

"This is a huge insult to me and to my country," Maktoum told Gulf News.

"How can someone portray an Olympic gold medallist from a country as a contract killer? Such a portrayal is neither good for me, nor for my country. What good has such a portrayal done for Dubai?" he asked.

Maktoum put the UAE on the sporting map last summer when he equalled the Olympic record while winning the country's first-ever medal in the double trap in Athens.

With his name as the UAE's only Olympic champion and the name of the country at stake, Maktoum feels it is high time that the ministry intervene.

"It's now up to the ministry of information and culture to take up the issue and see that the image of the UAE and its lone Olympic champion is not soiled anymore.

"I am a shooter and that is what I do best. It is not my responsibility to take up the issue with the ministry. My job is to represent my country and bring glory to the UAE.

"I am an ambassador for the UAE, and in the same vein, the ministry has to take cognisance of this and act accordingly," Shaikh Ahmad said.
